I’m thinking of putting one of these in an island.
http://www.sharpusa.com/products/FunctionLanding/0,1050,49,00.html
Has anybody used one? Pros, cons?
Seems nice that you wouldn’t have to bend over to open it. Be real easy to stir stuff up. Seems like it would be a pain to get stuff in or out, cause you’d need two hands. Might be a special pain getting hot stuff out.
Any tips?

I am not much help but I do know that Norm Abrams has one of those in his kitchen.

Personally haven't used one but did recommend the Sharpe unit to a client, she loves it and the look.
They do have a nice look. Now you see this one-eyed midget

I put one in my kitchen and have'nt had any problems with it. When working with the kitchen designer, she had not herd of it and could not find a cabinet for it. I ordered a 30x24 upper cab made my own base and set it on top.No complaints so far.
That looks great. I don't see anything that looks like a trim kit, is that right? Fits in very nicely. Now you see this one-eyed midget

I've installed two of them in the last two months. I like them a lot, no trim kit, just make your hole the size that the manufacturer says and slide it in. Both of the ones that I installed were Decor, don't know anything about the other brands. Electrical should be installed as spec'd so that the unit will fit in the hole...................damn electrician.
They are nice, slide open with a touch of a button, close the same way.
In both cases the HO'ers were thrilled with the operation of the units. It has that wow factor when they see it glide open/closed!

Doug, My cabinet opening is 24 1/16" W x 16 7/16" H x 23 5/16" DSpecs say the Sharp is 23 7/8 X 15 15/32 x 26 3/16 to the handleI can close the opening and cut out the back, I'm wondering if the front fits over the face frame at all, or simply slides in.I'll check out the Dacor. ON the Dacor the unit just slides in. I was trying to find the print for the cabinets out in my truck but couldn't, must have pitched them! I believe that the unit did lip over at the top and bottom, cant remember and my computer isn't recognizing my camera so the pictures of the damn thing are locked in and cant get them out, strike two.......... I'd have to look tomorrow but you'll have it figured out by then.
We build all of our cabinets custom so the draftsman/designer gets the specs and drawers the cabinets to handle the appropriate appliance. That's not much help either I guess.
I'm trying to find the specs for the Dacor on their site but not having any luck yet.
Doug
Gene has used them. IIRC several times.

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
Haven't heard any complaints.
Most cabinet mfr's now have cabinets that will fit these. Since the trend is to open kitchens and double wall ovens instead of combos, it sure is a help to keep the micro out of the minimal upper cabinet space.
Already have the cabinet installed. I need to see one of these things cos I don't exactly get how they go in... guess I'll have to head to the big city<G> Now you see this one-eyed midget

Approximate Dimensions:
Height
15 5/8"
Width
30"
Depth
24 5/8"
this is taken from the Dacor site, I know that the dimensions of the cabinet that i installed are 15 1/4" high, (which don't correspond with the 15 5/8 that Dacor says that they need) The width of the cabinet was 30" so no lip there.
The depth, that's the biggie! I know that our cabinet was made a little deeper for just this reason and the damn electrician even after I showed him that the outlet for the micro went in the upper left hand corner and there was just enough room for a single box goes and installs one of those stupid 4" sq boxes, had to redo his f%^k up.
Doug
I got the dacor dimension thing, and it does seem to lip over... lot pricier than the Sharp. Got a good sparky, he was talking about a low profile box. Now you see this one-eyed midget

Here is a sharp and it sorta looks like it has a lip but not sure. I figure you could work with that though.
Yea, the Decor stuff aint cheap! and I dont see a 24". looks like the sharp is though. Did see a 24" dacor but not the drawer one.

Ok, went to the Decor site, not the other ones that sell Decor, wtf was I doing!
anyhow, they show that you can get a 24 or 30" micro. So I guess it's posible but still mucho more money.

this site shows the dimensions of what you need for your box to hold the micro. Scroll down to page 3

The Dacor drawings are good, Sharp doesn't have any... but I guess that's why you pay 400 bucks more for the dacor... can't believe I'm even considering 800 beans for a microwave<G> Now you see this one-eyed midget

Guess I must have missed something, I thought I saw where Sharp had a drawer micro?
Sorry about all the posts leading you to who knows where, seams like you got if fingered out now though.

Sharp ain't got no install/measurement drawings like Dacor does!Gotta go find one & measure it up.And, it's not for me, my 99 dollar, Sharp-on-a-shelf-without-the trim-kit-that costs-more-than-the-microwave is just

Good dog, way to fetch, Bill LOL Thanks, those drawings are even better than Dacor's.Looks like I'll be cutting out some of the back, adding a smidge to the sides, and doing something to either the top or bottom rails... it was danged custom built cabinet, too... oy! Here's a pretty good picture of how the Decor fits in but I see that they are either 27" or 30" and didnt you say that you had a 24" opening? I think so so that rules out the Decor.
Doug
Checking the specs for my builder's unit, it shows that there will be a 7/8" overlap on each side, a 3/16" overlap at the top and a 7/16" overlap at the bottom of the unit.
My cutout dim is 22 1/8" x 14 13/16", and the unit is 23 7/8" x 15 13/32". Slides in with no trim; the front overlap takes care of that. It does need a plywood floor in the cab for support.
You probably have this info, but just in case.....
Seems like it would be a pain having all the buttons down at waist level.
