I got your attention.
Here’s why I’m so happy:
Back in the ’70s, picked up an old ‘scrap’ Milwaukee D-Handle 1/2″ Drill. It was caked with mud and sounded ratty.
I used it once and put it away somewhere and forgot about it until just a few weeks ago.
After cleaning it up I thought that it might have been worn out (major arcing from the brushes and dirty bearings = probably big-time wear).
WELL…..
I took it into the local electric tool specialist (we thought maybe a new armature, plus bearings, etc. would cost ~ $150). “Let’s have a look inside and give you a call before we talk about replacing it.”
Just got off the phone with the technician. Just needs a new cord and brushes. The bearings cleaned up fine and the armature just needed the commutator cleaned. Total charge: $13.
Not only is this thing about 40 years old, but EVERY part is available for service. That is so wonderful, how often do you find that your tool is no longer made by who you thought it was, and that no parts are available anymore and let me show you the ‘new’ model (invariably, mostly made of plastic and probably not even got any servicable parts inside).
This thing is heavy (all aluminum) but at this rate will surely outlast me.
Just wanted to share this with y’all.
Happy Hardwarin’! :o)
