I was wondering if anyone knows what the code says a minimum sill height for a window in a stairway should be to be untempered glass? I think it is 3 feet but I may be wrong. The window salesman at the jobsite couldn’t tell me and suggested all the windows in the opening should be tempered to be safe, even though some are over 4 feet above the closest tread. I am in Placer County Ca.

I believe it's eighteeen inches. I could be wrong, and if I am i hope one who knows better brings us both some insight.

"DO IT RIGHT, DO IT ONCE"
Tempered glass required:
When edge of glazing is closer than 24" to door & bottom less than 60" from floor.
AND
Walk through hazard [I guess that means you need tempered glass] required if :
exposed area of glass is 9 sq. ft. or more
edge of glazing is less than 18" above floor or ground
top edge greater than 36" above ground (I'm guessing that would include floor)
and within 36" of a walking surface.
Thats what the code check says ca. 1998
