I’m remodeling and I need to replace some old 1950’s awning style windows. Rough opening is 41”x17”. They are at the peak of south facing shed style roof. They let nice light into what would be a very dark part of the house.
In the winter the thermal gain is substantial. In the summer not so much but they are still south facing so cooling costs do come into play. I heat a lot more that I cool so I’m inclined to shoot for less U factor.
Acording to the “A Buyer’s Guide to Windows” I’m going to be spending
3.41 x 1.41 = 4.8 sq/f * 280 = $1344
Per window? Seriously? Wow.
Help me out here how much should I be expecting to spend on a decent double? Is that really true?

Dunno about where you live, but I just replaced all of my Chicago basement windows with vinyl 'awning' type windows. A 40" w. by 32" h. low-e argon window was made to order for less than $150.00. I wouldn't be surprised if a wooden version was twice the price, or more.
Good luck.
I don't know about a buyers guide but I would take the sizes and call a window supplier and find out my options and the cost.
