This is a mission style stairway I built last year out of white oak. Just simple 1 inch square balusters with a little collar trim on them. Square newels with 10 degree pyramid tops and bottoms.

*This is the newel post that consisted of 8 1 inch square balusters surrounding a 1.75 inch square baluster. These balusters were mortised through the first step and secured at the subfloor. The 6 inch diameter half sphere was made on my DeWalt 708 miter box. I just kept splitting the angles until I had a multi-faceted sphere that I then just sanded down.
*Stan, I'm simple, those stairs ain't. Explain the collars on the balusters a little more: ie. four pcs, face applied or dadoed in...how'd you cut 'em, RAS, miter box, table saw?
*So, you've never heard of croquet balls?
*Bucksnort: Those were just glued on. They were 1/4 inch thick by 9/16 inch. It took a lot of time just gluing them on.
*Billy- when this man says simple he means time consuming. As I said before, you do nice work Stan. Makes me cry. :....-{Thanks for sharing the pics, it helps me sometimes to see that caliber of work and detail. Keep sendin um in.
*Dale: Thanks again. I know there are many out here who could post just as nice or nicer stairwork. I am just playing with my digital cam.
*Stan, I have never been the quick one, but I really like the way those pickets look, and I don't get why you soley glued them. Headless pins wouldn't work? I'd like to do somethig like that, but don't have even close to enough clamps...
*Bucksnort: Actually I had my wife Barb glue them on. It was really no big deal, a little glue, two clamps, do this for about 10 balusters, then take the clamps off. I considered bradding them, but I thought it would be nice with no nails.
*My hat's off to Barb. No nails is much nicer, whaddid Barb use for clamps, and how'd she clean up the squeeze out?
*Bucksnort: Barb says thank-you. I cut something like 490 of those little mitered pieces, as there were about 120 balusters. I made a jig for the collar pieces and all the balusters were milled exact both dimensions. She clamped with two jorgenson clamps, and then wet ragged each one. It really didnt take her that long. They have been on for over a year and half now, and I havent had any pop off. They were made out of white oak and this wood is very stable.
*Thanks Stan & Barb, like I said, I love that detail, and will be stealing it the next chance I get...
