I am looking to replace the roof on my mother’s home, and she lives in the Monroe County region of upstate NY.
Her house currently has both box vents and soffit vents. Part of the roof is flat, and part of the roof is at a much steeper angle. Is mixing soffit and box venting advisable?
Thanks in advance.

what's a box vent?
There are other styles, but this is the basic idea...

Without a ridge vent, the soffitt vents don't do much other than allow moisture to equilibrate with the outside. If you are replacing the whole roof, you might as well put in a ridge vent at the peak. If there is no other way to vent the flat area, the box vent may also be necessary.
Thanks for your reply.I misstated my original question as I am not that familiar with the terminology, however, your answer has answered my question.A contractor that is quoting my job said that having both a ridge vent (in combination with soffit vents) and box vents was not a good idea. However, it sounds like a box vent might be necessary under certain circumstances where the ventilation might not be adequate from using the ridge vent and the soffit vents. Thanks again.
You're on the right track. The ridge vents or the box vents are for outlet. The soffit vents are inlet. Usually either ridge vent or box vents are used. If both are used, the box vents can become inlet for the ridge vent and short circuit the system.View Image
