I need to drill over 1000 holes into oak. They are for 5/8ths lag bolts going into white oak. I'm trying to get a nice finshed hole and the really hard part is I will have to drill them all at fairly steep angles. Rather then drilling a pilot/ shank and then drilling the forstner I was hoping that I could find someone that sells multistep drill bits and weld a Forstner bit on it. Does anyone have a source for such an animal? I've got a machinist buddy that can do the welding.
*Frenchy, That is a LOT of holes. Hope you're able to use a drill press--Forstner bits require quite a bit of feed pressure, especially in the larger diameters. It might be worth a call to a tech advisor at McFeely's Square Drive Screws. They sell a bunch of different type drill bits. Their catalog doesn't show a web address; ph is 800-443-7937. Good luck with it. GP.
*Hey Frenchy,I don't know of any multi-bits, but it's a good idea. Even set up with a drill press, the forstner bit may want to drift on you if your going at a steep angle. You might get your welding buddy to make you a jig out of a piece of pipe that is just the right ID to let your forstner bit slide through without drifting. He could weld this to a plate that you could then clamp to your white oak and drill by hand. Just a thought.Ed. Williams
*Frenchy,Goto http://www.wlfuller.com/ and check out their tapered drills and countersinks. I think you'll find just the tool. The C18 is the drill size for a 5/8-in-diameter lag. And if you want to countersink the head, they've got one of those that attaches to the drill shank to do the job with one tool.
