Pardon my ignorance here, I’m a DIY not a pro….I’m reshingling the back side of my house with cedar shingles. In the past, I’ve used stainless steel ring shank nails for my shingling jobs-hand nailed. In the interest of time, I am thinking about renting a pneumatic nailer (nail gun) this weekend. What kind of nails/staples are used with the gun for this application?

Hi mp,
You had it right the first time. Right nails, right method. Save the time of renting nailgun/compressor, buying nails for the gun of probable lesser quality and use it for HAND NAILING the shingles. You'll have a better installation, and you can feel the satisfaction of being part of the CRAFTSMANSHIP RENAISSANCE at the same time! And remember, most of us use nail guns for other people's houses!

I just finished doing a whole addition with shingles and i would recommend doing by hand as well. YOU will have to hand nail the small pieces under the windows if you have any and the ones at the top of the gable if you have one.
Plus you will never use up all the nails you have to buy for the gun, specially if this just a weekend project.
Have fun!
*If you must use power, I have found medium crown staples to be better than nails. I still hand nail with SS ring shanks on anything exposed.
*So, Guest User, what did you wind up doing ?Are you still looking for input ? How did it turn out?

i would use 5p galv for unexsposed nailing and ring shanked stainless for exposed nailing as far as renting neumatics i would say no for a one time job with one person working there not that much faster practice makes things faster
