Read FHB article on car decking installation. Great article, but I have another question. Article suggests 16d box nails, but would screws (besides labor overhead) be more effective/squeak free way to go?

I opt for screws. I feel they have better holding power. My preference, use what you are comfortable with. Running screws can be slower and if you go to fast and aren't very experienced you could end up with a bunch of "x" shaped holes in your hand. @x#&*. (read ouch)

If you use screws, are you planning to screw through the face and then plug? It's very labor intensive but can give some good results. I don't know if screwing through the tongues is a good idea, seems like they'd split a lot more. If you drill first, then I'd say just nail them off with ring shanked nails or flooring nails. What exactly is your application?

Back in 1984 I was involved in a major remodeling project for a customer. We used 1.3/4 t&g car decking for the flooring. We face nailed it with 16 galvinized box nails and we used our framing hammers with the full monty waffle. They loved it.
