OK here is one for ya. My brother in law called me on Friday about his rental unit not having any hot water. I asked him how much cell time he had for me to go into every possible reason why no hot water. He went to the unit & called me (I’m laid up with foot surgery couldn’t go look for myself) pilot light was out. I told in the best layman’s terms I could use to re-light the damn thing. Viola it lit but wouldn’t stay lit. After some chatting back & fourth I figured bad thermo coupler. So he trotted off to Home desperate where he got the damn thing from, they couldn’t help they don’t sell replacement parts for the water heaters they sell. I told him to try a couple of other places that were open on Saturday & no luck. I’m like it’s a stupid thermo coupler how hard could it be to get a new one then he tells me it’s left handed threads um holy crap batman. So me being laid up & can’t go anywhere I look up the manufacturer on line & no such company to be found hmmmm I did a product search & home desperate no longer carries that brand which I have never heard of mean while he has tenants with no hot water -he sends them to a hotel on his nickel-wish I had a landlord like that when I rented. So comes Monday I send him to my big guys who have everything tell him to use my company’s name so he can at least get in the door. & yup no luck so at last resort he buys a new “NAME†brand water heater & is out a good chunk of change Moral of story if you have never heard of it there is probably a good reason for it.

Every thermocoupler I've had needed a good cleaning with 220 grit every other year or so - same presentation as what you describe. Just the end near the pilot. Worth a try...
