Narrow house design

renmen | Posted in General Discussion on October 14, 2005 11:13am

I have just recieved building permits for a house in Vancouver, BC Canada that is 8′-6″ wide by 80′-6″ long with 2 stories and full basement. I was wondering if anybody knows what the narrowest freestanding house is?

    Welcome to BT.

I remember seeing one in Amsterdam that was only the width of the front door.  IIRC, a standard door (whatever that is).  It was a row house, so no idea if it fit your idea of freestanding.

    Please post pix.

WoW ! !.... and I was feeling a little constricted by the 57' wide lot we just bought to build on.

If that is not a record....you will no doubt be very close. Hmmm.. the more I think about it.....you can't be serious! :)

Guess your setbacks are less than the 25' (each side) we deal with.PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!

Mine is a typical subdivision lot. We have 4' setbacks on each side. If I had 25' setbacks...my house would win because it would only be 7' wide. :)

I did trusses for a narrow house in Chicago many moons ago.

As best as I can recall it was 22' wide, ~90' long, and 4 stories with a basement.

One of the reasons I remember it was that the stairs were "sequenced" instead of stacked. From the first floor you walked up to the 2nd floor. There was a 4' landing, then the stairs took off right in front of you up to the 3rd floor, etc.

It was like a 60' run of stairs with a landing at each floor. Wasted a lot of space, but was an interesting idea.

I also remember it because the framer installed the floor trusses upside down, and we spent a lot of time on repairs...

If FedEx and UPS were to merge, would they call it FedUp?

is it open to the wind?

if it was any skinnier you'd need tether cables to keep it from toppling over...

There must be a good reason for building a house 8'6" x 80'6".  My office trailer is only 8'4" wide, but it is also only 18' long.  It is 8'4" wide so we can pull it from site to site. Why build a house 8'6" wide (x 80'6" long)?

Does anyone remember the article about the mobile home community in or near Denver or perhaps Aspen? The home owners, who were leasing their lots, got together and bought the property from the owner. The article was about a young architect who built a home on his narrow mobile home (singlewide) space.

Threr is a house here in Alameda that is known as the spite house that is about 10' wide and maybe 40' long, 2 story. The name has something to do with fueding neighbors, might try to take a pic this weekend to post.

If nothing else, the floor joists will be easy to size (assuming you aren't running them the long way...)
