I have to replace about 20 cedar hand split (1/2 to 3/4) shingles on my home. The original are 37 years old. The new ones will not match the old ones. Does any body have any suggestions on how to “age ” them or color them to match pretty close?

Ain't gonna happen. Just put them up as is ( ageing them, will just shorten thier life) and they will grey out in a few months.

Thanks for the info. I thought they would age, but not as quick as you say.
Thanks again.
in NE.. you will often see shingles & shakes patched in...
after two years it all blends..
i wouldn't spend a lot of time trying to match them .. let nature do it
BTW.... if they are "hand splits" ( either "sawn back " or true " hand splits" )
then they are "shakes" not "shingles".. shingles are sawn , front & back
Thanks, Mike
I always thought shakes were not tapered and were used on roofs
only. I appreciate the education.

You could try dissolving a box of baking soda into 5 gallons of warm water, and spray it on the shakes. The oil in the cedar reacts and turns it a darker type weathered look, and being it is not a coating it won't hinder mother nature from weathering them further.
If your existing shakes are more silver looking this doesn't work as well.

Sounds interesting. I'll try it out.
