Anyone buy a gas can lately? Are they all the spring loaded anti spill type for off road use only, or are the old style with the snap cap still around? All the ones I have found are “for off road use only”.

Try your Army/Navy surplus. they probably still have some of the old types floating around
I have one, and like it once I got used to it. The thing doesn't seem to spill as much when I haul it around in the trunk of the car.
Bending the handle thingy a bit seemed to help.
A: With a quackerjack.
Most new gas cans suck!
The intended purpose is (I think) to limit the amout of vapors that are released. The spring thingy spout makes it just about impossible to fill a small engine tank without spilling, because you can't see the level rising.
In my riding mower, the tank openings are sized exactly wrong so I can't fill the two five gallon tanks without a funnel, negating the intention of the safety feature!
My solution was to just spring for several very pricey Justrite Type II safety cans http://www.justritemfg.com/containes.tpl
They have flame arrestors, flexible steel spouts, are made of powder-coated steel, and most importantly, they actually work.

Sorry for the double post. My fist post did not take the link, for some reason.
A local man was burnt alive (and fully conscious) when his SUV was struck broadside and rolled on its side spilling the gas can he had just filled. This happened in town on a 30 MPH street two blocks from the fire department. "It can never happen to me" attitudes change quick when 100 or so people watch that live as seveal brave souls risked their safety trying to save him. Buy a good spill proof can and strap it down so it won't fly around inside your vehicle. No sense taking a chance that you'l end up dying in one of the most horric ways most can imagine. This man should have walked away a little sore but barely scratched.
And for Lord's sake take those plastic cans out of your vehicle and put them on the ground when you are filling them. The static they can create is enough to ignite gas fumes.
