New faucet for old sink?

Marc5 | Posted in General Discussion on March 23, 2006 12:19pm

The faucet on this 50-year-old sink is shot.  Is there any way to replace it so I can keep the sink?  The valves are 8″ apart.  It’s an American Standard, and when I called them and went to their website, they weren’t much help.  There must be some place to find generic faucets that would fit this sink….but maybe not.

Thanks for any ideas.

Marc

Eljer used to make a bunch of similar designs.  You might google them and see.  I know you can still buy parts for yours and the Eljers at a decent plumbing supply house.  DanT

Check out Kohler Part #K-T154-3.  Would look right at home in that sink.

Not cheap though - lists over $500.  Kohler makes several nice wall-mounts.

Exactly..What is shot?  Stems, seats, washers. o-rings?

Looks like my father's sink...I rejuvinated it several times!

If it really is shot, then there are suitable replacements!

Most of which require a moderately thick wallet!

      Iron,

The moving parts inside the hot water valve are frozen together--I don't understand why, but a plumber couldn't even get them apart.  It still seems to shut water on and off, but it is very difficult to turn.  I felt pretty bad recently when some guests came to visit and the little girl couldn't turn the water on.  To stop leaking around the valve we used some of that waxed string--no rubber to be found that could fit it.  Seemed to work for a while, but perhaps that is why it is difficult to turn.  I just thought it would be better in the long run to replace, but this option appears to be rather pricey.  I don't know if the sink has much antique value.  Perhaps better just to replace the sink and put a mid-range faucet on it.  One nice thing about the sink is the big flat area on top for toothpaste, ect.

Pop-up drain ball assembly leaks too.  (see bucket under sink)  No gaskets for that available.

      Thanks,

      Marc

If the stem is frozen to the valve body then it probably needs replacing. Maybe removing the whole faucet and soaking in a penetrating solution to break it loose?

Danco makes all manner of valve stems that will replace what you have. Gaskets and rubbers , too! Try a google.

Even if American Standard does not have an equivilent there are other sources for ledge back lavatory faucets with pop-up.

Try Kohler brand, google on ledge back lav faucet, check out Renovator Supply, pick up the yellow pages and find a plumbing supply house, hit your local BIG Box and ask for the special order department in the batk/kitchen departmnt, find a GOOD old time mom&pop hardware store.

Nice fixture, definitely retro............in good condition, seems worth keeping. And considering that a modern piece will not be that color or size to fit with your room size and decor.  Compare the price of the new faucet to the proce of a complete bathroom overhaul.

          >>"pick up the yellow pages and find a plumbing supply house"

Iron, you gave me a "Eureka!"  Every plumber I know has a huge stash of stuff sitting around somewhere, with plenty of it being older.

Marc, maybe in addition to all of the good suggestions you have, call around to some more plumbers or see if one has a friend of a friend who has the parts or even the entire faucet you need.

The is a plumbing supply house in Kansas City that mainly handles repair and replacement parts. I don't think that there is WH in the place except for their restroom. But they had the right parts for a 25 yo Kolher one piece toilet that the local supply house gave me a ball 1/4" too small and did not have the replacement fill vavle parts. And while I was in there some one was getting some brass tub drain parts to fit in tigh space in a 1920's house. It is called The Plumbers Friend.

            Good deal.

That one is going in my rolodex.

" Is there any way to replace it so I can keep the sink? "

The question should be not IF, but WHY?

      Hey Bill

Be nice now some people like that harvest gold stuff

I don't know why but they do.

I think I should have saved my avacodo green lynolium floor I bet someone would give some cash for it on Ebay"There are about 550000000 firearms in worldwide circulation.
