Just finished stripping tyhe sheet vinyl in preparation to put down new wood floor. Now I’m pulling up the 1/4″ luan ply that was fastened with a million 1″ narrow crown staples. I’m going the nail the new floor down over tarpaper.
Question: do I need to pull the old staples, or can I pound them flush into the subfloor?

You can use a scraper and that will take out most of them in one swoop. Pull up the rest with pliers.
Tarpaper under woodfloor??? You mean waxpaper

We always used to use tarpaper under oak flooring. Now with the green and American Lung Assn influence we use red rosen paper. Generally it is fine to smash those staples down. You cannot work hard enough to make up for a sloppy estimate.
I felt guilty about not going all the way, so I spent 3 hours digging staples out of half the floor. Now I need to go back and set screws and nails, and then on with the show.

This thing works great. Best I have used. Far better than end nippers.
