I’m looking to replace the skinny and flimsy stair rail in my home
with top and bottom wooden newel posts that are large, semi-ornate,
unpainted (stained ok), and have a carved wood design (the kind that
you sometimes see in old hotels and houses). Does anyone know where I
can purchase? Any have websites with pictures?
Thank you

Have you considered buying from "ReStore"? (They're seconds in building materials and second hand building materials. Lots of good stuff salvaged from historic (ie: old) homes.)
And they're an offshoot of Habitat for Humanity. Profits from ReStore benefit Habitat for Humanity.
They have a website listing their 52 stores throughout the country. I'm a frequent visitor to the ReStore here in St. Louis and they usually have one or two newel posts and balustrades, just as you describe. And the prices are quite cheap. The one's I've seen (newel post) are under $150.
The URL is -
*Just got my new issue of "Woodworker's News" or something like that (I can never remember the name of it). It's the one that's like a newspaper in color. On the cover is a picture of a guy that took over a failing company that does ornamental turnings. VERY NICE STUFF! If your interested I can get the name for ya.Bill

tj,
That link did not work, do a search for newels herehttp://www.traditional-building.com/
KK
*tjp ,If you make posts yourself, I would consider building box newels as you desire and adding a carved applique such as something by Enkebol(www.enkebol.com) Designs or someone similar.
*I came up with a "not found" on http://www.enkebol.com; is that a good URL ?
*Try thishttp://www.enkeboll.com/home.html
*Ah, looks like a good resource, thanks.
*Oops, thanks here too.
*L.J has a website that is lacking but nice. They also have a link to their custom stair manufacturing division's site.
*What's an "L.J." ? Do they have an URL ?
