I have a problem with a second floor bathroom sewer line that is making more noise than we want when water is running through it. We changed the line from PVC to cast iron, but that didn’t seem to have much effect. The wall is still open so we can make additional adjustments if there is anyone who has ideas to help us conquered this. Thanks!

I'll give this a shot since I hate to see it disappear and ruin this sites reputation of knowing everything -
Have you carefully analyzed the source of the noise? is it the water through the waste pipe in the wall or is it the floor/toilet base above the unisulated ceiling -
Wherever the noise is coming from, surround it with sound dampening insulation - fiberglass boxed with blue foam for instance - isolation and sound adsorbtion -
send more details of the situation if you want a more detailed recommendation -
*I posted to this during the Deleted Day. I'll try it again.Since this is already open just pack the bay with insultion. I prefer fibreglass for this. Be sure it goes from top to bottom and that the entire floor under the toilet is covered. That normally takes care of it. But I have had to comletely insulate all walls, floor and ceiling of a bathroom to make it acceptably quiet. The downside of this is that it takes time to do. The upside is that fibreglass is cheap and once done and with a good door to the room it becomes the quietest room in the house. Perfect for those long meditation sessions.
*Is the DWV piping properly sized? Is the run properly vented? Check upsteam. There could be a partial block resulting in turbulent/"gurgling" flow.Is the new cast iron isolated from both the other piping and the house's structural framing members with neoprene or rubber-type gaskets/hangers? Is there adequate clearance around the pipe where it pases through the sole and cap plates?Take care of the details, then pack with insul batts and temporarily place a drywall cap over the bay. See if the sound is diminished.Good luck...I hate plumbing noises.
