I have an 50’s house with two Case one piece toilets. They have the strangest mechanism I have ever seen. We have lived here for 20 years and except for replacing the rubber on the valve seats they have worked fine. Suuddenly one of them makes a very loud noise when first flushed and then another longer loud noise as it ends the fill cycle. The family has gotten to calling it the farting toilet. Any ideas?

Most likely the fill valve had crude in it or the "washer" has gotten hard.

the washer had been replaced soon before this started.

I have replaced the washer several times and that never happened, but I will replace it again and see what happens.
Does the sound happen when the tank is filling & stops when the tank is full?

There is a short (1 second), loud sound immediately upon flushing, then a somewhat quieter, longer (2-3 seconds) sound just as it is shutting off.

Something in the valve assembly is acting like a reed in a saxaphone.
If replacing the washer did nothing I would swap the whole assembly with a fluidmaster ballcock kit.

I woud have done that long ago if it was possible, but the mechanism in this old Case toilet is such that the opening in the tank is at the top, not the bottom like all the other toilets I have ever seen.
Got a pic?
make, model?

how do you attach a pic to a reply?
When you are typing a reply, look down at the bottom left of the screen, there is a blue box "Attach Files". Click that and follow the instructions. it weorks best oif the picture is less than 200k, closer to 100k works very well."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

OK, here is a pic. Anyone gfamiliar with it? What is an angel valve?
In the early seventies American Standard had a single piece/low profile /elongated bowl style that had a similar tank system as per your picture. 5 gal flush!
I had three of them in the house I built in 72'...all eventually were replaced as the parts for the flush valve assemblies failed and were difficult to find as well as very expensive.
The cast valve assembly was $100 in the mid 1980's. The plunger O-rings and bottom washers were where the American standard valve assemblies were prone to seeping and vibrating on the flush cycle. Replacement seal packages were $17 and in the end failed to get any results as the brass assemblies had worn and would not seal well.
In the end all were replaced with toilets that had "normal" ballcock and flush assemblies that were servicable from common stock parts.
From your picture, it looks as you should consider replacing your toilet.

plumbbil's is the best reply of the bunch, though I may argue about Fluidmaster, sold in box stores, except that it's the easiest DIY solution and will only last about ten years. Wait a minute -- it costs eleven bucks and lasts ten years and is easy to install? Have to think about that some more.
Second that. A washer that is loose will do that.
Do you have city water ? if so check your water pressure. could have a bad pressure regulator. Should read somewhere around 60 psi
Less likely, but it possibly a loose washer or debrie in the stop valve or even the supply tube..

Use the other toilet.

Youd be surprised.

try turning the angel stop so less water enters tank may be as easy as that
I had this problem once and it was the fact that the water shut off needed to be turned on more, then it stopped. Susan
