I am preparing a site plan to file at our local county planning office. In a preliminary discussion, I was told that as I am located in a Federally designated scenic area, that no metal roofs are allowed. Since I was planning on a metal shop building (like those located on 3 sides of me) in addition to a metal roof on my proposed house, this may require a bit of negotiation with the permitting authorities. The specific requirement is that all roofs be dark and non-reflective. While there are some metal roofs for houses that aspire to look like tiles or shakes that have granular coatings, all of the steel shop buildings that I have seen have some type of epoxy or enamel coating that is usually as reflective as gloss enamel.
Does anyone have any experience with applying “non-reflective” coatings to steel roofing or at least some thoughts on the matter. What I need at this point is something to put down on the application as to how I will meet the “dark, non-reflective roof” requirement. While I don’t have a lot of experience as a painter, I do have a “6 hp” compressor and some HVLP paint spray guns. Unfortunately, the planning office personnel will not tell me what types of things are allowed – I have to submit a proposal which is accepted or rejected. Unfortunately, given their time lines, if it is rejected the first time I probably will not have enough time left to get the shop built this summer.
Let’s see, how about some dark green flat paints in an Army camouflage pattern with some black sand tossed on it while still wet…
(In addition to Breaktime, I will probably ask the “Sherwin-Williams paint guy” as listed on another currently active post and also the coatings discussion board at http://www.horizonweb.com/wwwboard/Coatings/wwwboard.html )

Hi were you able to make any progress on this? I have a similar situation I'm dealing with and I know there must be some proven workarounds for non reflective metal roofs.
How about a patina. When I get to my computer I’ll post more info
