Norm’s new tool?

Dreamcatcher | Posted in Tools for Home Building on January 4, 2009 01:32am

I was watching New Yankee Workshop today (Planter’s Desk – Program #2101 ) and noticed Norm using what appeared to be a Lamello cordless plate joiner?

I was quite surprised…..isn’t he paid by PC? And when did Lamello come out with a cordless version? I couldn’t exactly tell if it were a new or old episode as he was also using an old black 12V porter cable cordless drill.

I have seen him many times using newer cordless PC drills…why the heck would he all the sudden pull out an outdated tool?

I looked online for the cordless plate joiner but came up empty…is this something that is just for Norm?

PS…I am NOT a Norm fanboy or anything.

I also watched this show, and it looked like to me it was an old show, as I noticed he was using other tools that I am sure he has replaced since.  I have seen other episodes where he used a Lamello plate joiner. ----WW 57

You are correct this was an older show.

I have followed the new Yankee workshop for well over 15 years. Back when Norm had no grey hair. He is the sole reason I am a woodworker today.

I don't know the specifics of his agreements with sponsors and over the years he has used different tools at times. For example he is sponsored by titebond glue however at times he uses elmers not often though. He is sponsored by Minwax but as he has gotten better at finishing, he often uses stains and products by other makers.

Another example, his big spindle sander is not a delta but a grizzly, I am almost sure of it.

However for as long as I am aware he has used a lamello plate joiner. I think that Lamello developed plate joining technology, and when his show was new he aquired a lamello and used it. However he often uses the PC model now.

He also used to use a Fein ra sander with dust collection. Also the only dewalt tool I have ever seen him use is a cordless ra drill.

In his earlier shows he also favored a small dhandle makita router. In very early books he also used a Shopsmith.

Oh, I also have that drill excellent tool . It is a shame that Portercable has been swallowed up by the Dewalt /Black and Decker conglomerate. Hopefully not but it wouldnt surprise me to see quality degrade in the tools now wearing the Pc label.

I am not aware of a cordless lamello, a visit to their website http://www.lamello.com turned up nothing.

It is a new show. First of tthe 2009 season.

And Tivo shows it as first being aired in 2009.

But I noticed that many of the shows that they have in that list are if they are not repeats, they are redo's.

Then I see this at the top.

"The New Yankee Workshop returns to PBS with a compilation of 26 episodes. Each program will feature a popular project from a past season with new introductions by host Norm Abram."

It looks like the shows are all going to be repeats of the 9th and 10th season.

    http://www.newyankee.com/catalog.php

And I watched the credits at the end of the show. It has a Special Thanks to Lamello.

I always check the Special Thanks on NYWS and TOH.

It's a Lamello tool. They made a cordless biscuit joiner years ago, but have apparently since discontinued it. Here's a site that tracks all the tools Norm uses, as well as the episode(s) they've appeared in...http://www.normstools.com/joiners.htm

Cool site. I stand corrected. It is a delta spindle sander.Webby

Wow, thanks everyone (exccept McDesign). The link provided was quite interesting. Although not surprising, it is still weird to see that some Norm fan out there catalogues his tools so carefully. I can't believe he has used so many different tools over the years. I suppose I would too if all my tools were free.I wonder why I've never seen another cordless Lamello? I have to guess it never made it to the U.S. and Norm got a special freebie. I'm still surprised that Festool hasn't swooped in and swallowed the show since the PC/Delta sellout to B&D. I've noticed that Tommy Silva went all Festool lately. It's hard to say what will happen to the quality of PC/Delta since the sellout....PC came out with some cheapo cordless tools but Delta came out with a sweet new Unisaw. I'm thinking they both (or all four companies involved) really need to get their poop in a group. B&D is almost as bad as GM now. At least they are still funding the show.DC

That name is as pricey as Festool...  The company's plastic boat-shaped glue injector for squirting glue into the boat-shaped slot costs around $150.00...

This guy seems a little obsessed with Norm!  I have been a fan of him and a few other woodcrafters, but I don't think I would ever go to this length to document it!

I am, however, starting to keep a close eye on Stan's tool usage to make sure his fame hasn't gone to his head! ;-)

That's the beauty of the internet, it gives folks like that a more public outlet for their obsessions. And it become a birthing place for new folks to become obsessed. You gotta admit that the resources of information available on the net are staggering and amazing, some of it more useful, some less.
