Need help!
Im remodling a house in Haverford Pa. and the pluber needs to cut the floor joists to run his pipes. What are the rules/codes on how much of the joist can he cut out or drill a hole, with out weaking the joist?
I know your going to need the size of the joist, but i havnt opened the floor just yet. Can any one give me the formula for joist notching.
thanks ldcinc

The "formula" is don't notch. Drill IF you have to. I believe no more than 1/3 joist width and above center.
But I only do plumbing being held at gunpoint.

If your "Plumber" does not know how to run it to code, he is not a "Real" Plumber.
I allways like to double check, since so many trades now adays like to take short cuts..

How many joists does he have to drill through?Sometimes you have to put a plumbing box in.Joe Carola
I thought that code for a real plumber, was not to notch it.Just cut it out of the way with sawzall or if a master plumber a chainsaw.
You beat me to it. I once bought a house where a plumber cut through 3 of the 6 floor joists in a first floor bathroom. Luckily the joists were 2x6 spanning about 12' so no one noticed the extra spongey floor.
I like that one, only thing worse than plumbers are HVAC hackers.

An old house in Haverford the floor joists are probably already notched. If your not changing the layout youight be able to use old notches and nail plate them.
