I’m replacing some quarter-round molding on wood steps. I decided to use Azek because the previous molding rotted. The customer asked me today to paint the steps and that they would provide the paint, but what I hadn’t realized is that the steps had previously been painted with an oil-based paint.
Now, oil on PVC trim is not a good idea due to expansion/contraction so I have 3 choices:
1# use the oil anyway and take my chances. This is probably not a good idea especially since the steps are a dark color.
2) paint the PVC with acrylic #as recommended) and the rest of the steps in oil. This is also probably not a good idea since the color/sheen may not match.
3) paint everything with acrylic.
I’m leaning towards option 3, but that means buying more paint and using a primer first. Still, it’s probably the best of 3 less-than-ideal choices.
