I have this really old bathroom with the original 1929 plumbing fixtures. Above the tub, there are 2 sets of hot and cold faucet handles. I want to replace them as well as the pipe leading up to the shower, which means opening up the wall. There’s no sheetrock here; it’s old plaster. Once I replace the pipes and hardware, to what do I attach the new sheetrock to cover the hole? There won’t be any studs. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Why no studs? Anti-gravity? Monocoque construction? Splain, please.
*We have to assume that the construction is lathe and paster or possibly gypsum board and then plaster and that you have just cut a slot/holes to get to your pipes. If this is the case, then I would suggest a piece of 5/8 plywood placed against the back of the wall and then screwed through from the front. I might try to countersink the screws to keep them flush to the finished plaster. Then fill in the gap with 2 bits of 3/8 gyprock or whatever it takes to make it even. Then plaster. enjoy. Derek
*Derek's solution has worked for me also. However, several times it was just easier to remove plaster/lath back to the closest studs. Be thankful you don't have old tile up there also.have funscc
