Just about every roofing company is on a limited allocation for shingles. So, getting shingles here in Texas is a “wait and see” problem, plus I understand that because GAF is having some problems with their dark shadowing becoming black lines during production, it’s slow delivery even more. The Armor Shield II production is set to be delivered after October 3.
I have a residential roof and a storage shed roof totaling 63.5 squares and want an Impact Resistant shingle. The current GAF/ELK Armor Shield II is their new product. The original ELK Armor Shield shingle, (Barkwood) now out of production, but because of the shingle shortage, it may be substituted instead of the new product, and the “System Plus Limited Warranty” is being given.
I’m a bit concerned that it’s getting brittle, since it’s been so long since it was discontinued. If this is considered old stock, is it getting too old? Is using the older shingle and having the 20 yr. defect warranty a good thing or would having the same warranty the newer Armor Shield II now being sold be a better choice?
Thanks,
Bill

I'm a fan of ELK shingles. I've used them as replacements on my last three houses. I'm not aware of a GAF/ELK shingle but have had problems with GAF so I would not go with a shingle made by them.
I'm not sure if a shingle ages when it's not on the roof. Guess it depends how it's stored. When I re-roof and toss the spare singles I've been saving (for patching) they seem like new.
Just my advise, but I'm not a pro roofer.

GAF bought ELK a couple of years ago and the old ELK products are gradually getting phased out. I agree with your sentiments. View Image

No longer than it's been out of production, I wouldn't worry too much about them getting brittle. I'd make sure that the product was all from the same run though, to insure a good color match.
From what I've seen, GAF's warranty isn't worth the paper it's printed on, but it's been a number of years since I've bought any GAFs.
