Got a problem that I am a bit unsure how to attack.
I own a small bungalow and the front door is original and faces sunset. It has three recessed panels that run between vertical members. The center panel has shrunk to reveal a gap that ranges zero on top to about a 1/4″ at the bottom.
Is there any method to fix this type situation that doesnt require me to disassemble the door? I have tried to move the panel by hand but it is held in tightly.
Suggestions? Anyone run into this and were able to fix?

If the panel is still whole and there is no gunk in the groove, you might be able to bring it back over by dropping the door on edge, being carefull of course. Or if you want a more controlled persuasion, cushion a clamp to the panel only and drive the clamp/panel over slowly. Before you start, score the joint between panel/rails and stiles. Break the finish there. Then proceed. If you have room and can get it in the groove, sometimes there are rubber bb's placed in the groove to keep the panel gently centered. Don't know where you could get a cpl other than a cab shop that uses them. Both ways, be gentle, don't bust anything up.
*First, I'd do everything I can to release the panel, as Calvin has suggested. Try a single-edge razor blade, work on both sides of the door and be patientYou'll want to clean out the groove where the gap occurs so it will accept the panel when it is shifted back into position, and perhaps chamfer the open edge of the panel so it will fit more easily into its slot.Your objective is to release the panel so it may be shifted without cracking the panel. You're lucky so far... often when there's shrinkage of the nature you've experienced, the panel is held so tightly at each side that it splits down its length.Good luck, Steve
*b WBA At Your ServiceIf the door has a moulded profile on the edges of the stiles and rails, you can trim the moulded portion from the flat section with a utility knife and remove the moulding and then the panel. If the profile is just a simple bead, you could sacrifice it with a circular saw and replace it with quarter round. Or if no moulded profile exists, you could add one to cover the gap. A quarter round or even ovolo glass bead.
*Excellent suggestions! Thanks much!Didnt think about adding add'l trim to the panel! Might use that as a last resort. I'm going to attempt to score and "persuade" the panel a bit more agressively first. Thanks to all!
*Yo kevin, Let us know how it works out.
