I need to replace a hollow core door with a solid 6 panel door and in the process install an old fashion mortised lock (the square ones not the new round ones) into the door, to match all the other doors. Is there a technique for this? Old timers must have installed millions of these, and I can’t imagine they chiselled them out. But perhaps they did. Any advice?

Use a drill bit that matches the thickness of the lockset to drill out most of the waste, then use a chisel to clean out the rest. Just be careful when drilling that you don't go thru the face of the door. Its really not all that hard to do, and it shouldn't take more than an hour or so, even if its the first one you've done.
A morticing machine is available thats designed for these locksets, but if you only have one its not worth the expense.
Thanks, I kind of figured that would be the route.
You might also want to borrow or buy a gooseneck mortising chisel to assist in cleaning out the bottom of the mortises. Great tool for this.
