I want to get some opinions on one of the laser layout tools on the market. I ‘ve been considering buying a PLS 5X to help in laying out foundation walls, sill plates, interior walls. But before I choke on the $450.00 price tag I want to make sure I’m not buying an expensive peice of junk. Anybody use these things regularly, or even occasionally? What are your thoughts on them?

Get your hands on a JLC article by Tim Uhler (I think around December '06). He uses one for floor deck framing and likes it a lot. I think the PLS is a good product.
The PLS5x is a solid tool. I have had one for about 5 years and it's indispensable. If budget is no object get a PLS90 for squaring, and a rotary laser.
I bought the pls5x last week because of Tim Uhlers article. It's well built and solid feeling for a laser. I never feel really good after buying anything expensive. I picked up a festool ts55 a few monthes back and still feel a bit guilty.

I bought a new extra portable table saw last month and have only used it once. I feel like you do.

You are both forgiven. Go forth and build stuff.
Business is and will start to pick up soon, spring is near (if only it would stop raining). My stomach still aches a little.

I have the PSL2x (I believe that's the #), and I can't believe how it's already paid for itself by saving the man hours. Used it just yesterday to lay out a wrap around deck. We were in bright sunlight, but if you have the detector, it doesn't matter.
