I am adding a nonbearing partition wall
at a corner. The wall which will be extended by the added wall has the double studs in it. My question is what the the accepted way of tying the top plates together. The upper plate cannot be extending over the existing wall, since the perpendicular wall’s top plate
must be there to tie the corner together. The best way seems to be to remove part of the existing lower plate and extend the plate from the added wall
into that area. Is this unneccessary overkill and is there and easier way to do this?

One simple way..is to cut the perpindicular wall plate back 1 3/4 inches...notch a continous plate to accomodate the jog...and install a continous plate from end to end...on the straight wall..
Then run a simpson ST18 strap or equal..on the top plate of the perpindicular wall...and tying to the
new top plate..and the plate below...

*Carl, while notching the 1"3/4 out would be good a simple partition wall wouldn't require more than a simpson MST 36" or 48" to tie it to the existing while leaving the integretity of the existing overlap alone.
