Hi there, I am planning to paint some rooms with oak mouldings, wainscotting, door casings, baseboards. I was wondering what the best method is to protect the edges of the oak mouldings.
In the past I have taped the edges but some paint always gets in behind the tape. What’s the best way to protect the oak mouldings?

The best way? A steady hand, and a good, properly loaded brush.
If you need to mask, try one of the newer tapes. How long will the tape be on? If you plan on several days, the "blue" tape is recommended by my paint supplier. Less chance of the adhesive pulling off the finish of what it's applied to.
If the tape will be on for less then three days, my supplier recommends the rolls of brown paper tape with "post-it" like adhesive.
Apply the tape, and burnish the edge on to the trim. This is still not a license to slop the paint on. Capillary action always seems to win. Still do your best to be neat, using the tape as a bit of goof protection.
Let the paint dry before removing the tape. When removing the tape, some simply peel it off, I've seen others lightly run a razor blade or new utility knife blade along the tape/paint line to break any paint bridging from the masking tape to the wall. It may help prevent the tape from pulling the paint off.
