I understand there has already been a good deal of discussion regarding decking, so apologies for another question. I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction to existing articles OR provide new input on best wood and painting materials for a back stair and deck. We are located in the northern Midwest and the deck faces south. I really want an opaque paint finish (for color purposes) that would ideally be provided on the railing, exposed trim and decking. I am trying to determine what lumber species to use and appropriate paint finish. The actual framing would most likely be pressure-treated lumber. Thank you.

For your conditions, extreme heat and cold and southern exposure; I would suggest 1) for the deck Azek in a color of your choice; 2) railings of cedar or redwood (Con heart) and 3) a opaque stain (not paint) that matches or compliments the Azek color. Azek makes a skirt board that would cover the pressure treated wood (it should be ground contact treated). I have used stainless steel cabling on several jobs which eliminates some of the wood necessary for railing. Hope these ideas help
