This is not what it sounds like. A painter friend of mine has been contracted to do some repainting in a Spa, throughout their treatment rooms. She is planning on doing some decorative painting and would prefer to work over the existing semi-gloss on the walls. Only trouble is, there is massage oils everywhere. Any suggestions as to what one might use to clean the walls without losing the sheen of the semi-gloss?

Detergent, like TSP or, my preference, much less noxious Simple Green. All residue (of soap and oil) must be gone before painting. Be sure that the decorative paint will adhere well enough to the semi-gloss without first priming and/or roughening the surface.

I've used tsp as a cleaner on semi-gloss prior to
decorative painting; advantages are it cleans
great and should remove the oils; it will de-gloss
the semi-gloss somewhat but not alot; the other
option is to degloss just the area she's painting
if not the entire wall; adherance can be difficult
with some types of semi-gloss without deglossing
