If I get my trim prefinished in a semi-gloss clear conversion varnish, can I brush a coat of clear polyurethane over it in areas I need to touch up?

The problem with poly is that it doesn't "melt" into the previous layer. This makes sanding poly tricky. You might have a seam where the poly and varnish meet.
