I finished a patio cover 3 months ago. I pre-primed and painted the 4×6 and 4×12 beams before erecting. The cover is in LA and sees approx 4 hours of afternoon sun. It has not rained since completion.Blisters and bubbles have started to appear. Could this be a result of residual moisture trying to escape or is it something else?

I can't believe that no one has responded. The residual moisture theory sounds good to me, but I don't know much about it. What kind of wood did you use?
Anybody?

*A few guesses here ...... try popping a few of the blisters, if there are knots below, there's your problem. You can sand the affected areas and reprime with BIN (a pigmented shellac) to seal the knots. The second possibility(and the more likely one) is moisture. If the wood is pressure treated and not KDAT (kiln dried after treatment), the wood needed to dry out before painting. Were the beams direct from a mill and still green? Even if it was KD, if it was stored outside in the rain, moisture could be the culprit. The third possibility is from applying the paint directly in the sun. Latex in particular seems to blister. Hope this helps.
*Rich,I can believe that nobody has responded. This subdivision of the main board is for Construction Techniques, not discussion of wood finishes. It appears some posters aren't paying attention to this here, in the Tools section (where they're discussing metal studs and drywall bead), or in Energy. Barney should have posted to the general board.
