Part of the basement finishing project is to paint the basement stairs.
It’s currently a very glossy paint…possibly lead based (old house) with some really crappy carpet on top down the center.
we want to omit the carpet completely and then paint over the steps. Recommendations?
I assume I’ll need a really good primer (Zinsser?) to ensure adhesion.
What about ‘grip’. Are there any paints that provide a bit of traction? Should I mix in an aggregate? Any nice looking grip-strips I could add?

Check your local Sherwin Williams store. They have a couple of good deck coatings and a mix in aggregate. It give onugh tecture to provide a none slip surface, but doesn't change the color. They will also tell you what to for surface prep and the prosciptive primer for your selected product.
