Hi All,
I need to build a patio roof 14′ deep(house wall to end of slab = 14′) & 20′ wide. Roof covering will be rolled roofing /tar. I was thinking that I needed a minimum of 1-12 or 2-12 pitch. Considering the 1-12 pitch, there will definitely be head clearance issues under the 4×6 header (bottom of ledger board will be at 90″ high -14″ of pitch drop -6″ of header = little room for head clearance).
The rafters will be 2×6’s, the job is in Phoenix, so there are no snow loads.
So the questions are:
Would I go with less pitch to get more header height?
or
Can I put a plate (perpendicular to the trusses) up on the gable roof to get a higher start height? The look wouldn’t be great but it will allow a higher header height (may need a bigger rafter, 2×8?)
Thanks,
Chris

Youcan raise the tied on end at the house. Normally I would not want less than 1/12 for rolled roofing, but in Phoenix, for a open patio, you could probably drop the pitch to 1/2".
Even better than rolled roofing is the new breed of peel'N' stick like bituthene with a mineral surface.
