I recently purchased a house where the previous owner had stained the window with Miniwax Helmsman spar Urethane, gloss. Unfortunately he forgot to remove the masking tape from one of the windows. The tape has been on about two months. Scraping does a poor job and the blade tends to cut into the silicone caulking. None of the commercial “tape removers” seem to do much good. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Sandblasting. Masking tape is evil. Does paint thinner do any good? Heat (hair dryer)?
*Fred,No gaurantees, but there is a product called "goof-off" that seems to work very well in these situations. You can find it at your local hardware store

I've used this trick when painting:
Run a razor along the tape as close as possible to the silicone, then spray the taped areas with Wiindex. Use a flat razor to carefully peel off the tape. The ammonia seems to help release the bonding agents of the tape.
Goof Off works, but it smells nasty, and then you've got another can of crap to set in the shop for who knows how long.
Good Luck

I know this sounds crazy, but Avon Skin-so-Soft removes a lot of stuff, like adhesive tape residue and those self-stick labels. After seeing how well this stuff works, I began to wonder if it's safe to put on your skin.

Try xylene; stinky, but fast...

Is that the stuff that makes a good bug repellant? And someone said goof-off = xylene, I think.
