Dear People,
We’re living in a one-bedroom house on a forested ridge in the foothills of the Upper Cumberland Mountains. We’ve decided to make some changes: additions and new out buildings. We need some fundamental help; our ridge is narrow enough to require that we put at least 3 walls of any one structure on piers. Our ridge is composed of Churt. Only one or two inches of dirt covers the rugged fragmenting substrate. Churt is an unstable foundation. The subtlest exposure of the stone leads to its disintegration. Beginning with micro-fractures and ending with pieces, one to 12 inches L x W x D, of the ridge rolling down its slopes. It is a relatively slow process, but it proceeds unabated. I’ve built several custom homes. However, not in this environment. How shall I make the holes I need to set the form tubes and pour the pier foundations?
Sincerely,
