Brac,
That 1/2" ply has to be spongy when you walk on it without any other top as a subfloor???
If it were me, I'd add a layer of 3/4" ply on top of the 1/2" before I laid my finish floor. If not that, at least another layer of 1/2" or you're going to have squeaks and soft spots.
Run the subsequent layer of ply perpendicular to the bottom layer.

*There is a code requirement. If you lack a code book, call the inspector.
*Brac, Since you are removing 5/8 PB, replace it with 5/8cdx. Like Michael said, your floor will be spongy if you do not. Also you will not have as good holding on nailing, with only 1/2" .I respectfully disagree with Michael on direction of running the new cdx however. I would run the new course of plywood perpendicular with the joists. I would stagger my joints and seams with the original course. Run rosin paper between courses to help minimize squeaks. Use a 8d screw shank nail for fastening and nail well.Run your flooring perpendicular to the joists as well.walk gooddavid
