I have a project with high plaster walls that have long runs of chip cracking (alagatoring) that run vertically in tapering strips (no bigger than 2 to 4 inches wide). The building is no more than 20 years old. There is no evidence of leaking or moisture infiltration. The contractor has removed the vinyl wall covering, sanded and skim coated the entire wall. However the chip cracking is still evident, though much less so. My feeling is that the chip cracking is due to the original improper application of plaster (over an excessively dry base coat). To correct the problem fully the contractor probably should have removed plaster down to sound material and then skim coated. Since new textured vinyl wall covering is going back up I am hoping that the chip cracking will not show through and will not get any worse. Does anyone agree or do you think the chip cracking will continue and eventually show through the wallcovering?

Mike -- Seeing the cracks immediately after new skimcoating sounds like trouble. Rather than pay for taking off your new wallpaper to repair your poor plaster job, if you can wait till the next change of season (when plaster failure often appears)you could see if the new plaster just crumbles off. In the future, clean out the cracks till you hit hard plaster and apply Plaster Weld before repairing with new plaster (I like a mix of joint compound and plaster of paris). Hope it's not a disaster and good luck in the future.
