Hi all
A quick question regarding heating systems.
I’m working on a renovation and need to turn off the water to work.
The heating system is the typical hot water baseboard system.
It has a feed from the water line to fill it and keep it full (has a special valve for that).
If I turn off the water, do I need to worry about topping the water in the heating system every now and then or is it ok to just leave it off for 2 months while we work.
We need to keep the heat on to work (about -20 on and off here), but not the water.

Unless there is a leak in the system, you should not have to have the makeup valved in at all. I've had mine isolated for ten years, and other than the maintenance that's been required, it stays that way. I have pressure gages on the supply and return headers of the heating system which I monitor frequently (history of failed copper joints) and once the winter cycle has kicked in, the pressure remains within a given band.
