hello all.
I have a few questions about using plywood as a flooring option.
I’ve been interested in using sheet materials as a finished flooring option for a while now and once experimented with cut plywood laid in a pinwheel pattern. I opposed the direction of the grain and stained the two sizes of squares a different color(cherry and black walnut). I laid this on a solid subfloor and used a bead of construction adhesive and trim screws to attach the pieces of plywood. I have friends who want to use a similar idea in a workshop. The existing floor is linoleum on top of about a half inch of cement on top of a wood floor. The linoleum however does not cover the whole floor there are parts that are patched with plywood, but where there is linoleum it’s solid.
My questions are …
(1) What should be done to level the floor for the plywood to be put down on?
(2) What is the easiest way to secure the plywood finish to the subfloor?
My thoughts on what to tell them are…
Use a self leveler in the sections that need it and lay a quarter inch luan over the whole floor to be covered. I am also wondering if a troweled-on flooring adhesive like one used for laminate flooring or thinset would work?

You kind of lost me here a bit. You're saying there are areas of the floor that have a half inch layer of concrete laying on top of a wooden floor and the linoleum is laying on top of the concrete?
Meaning someone in the past already put a thick floorleveler product on there but there are some funny areas of the floor that had plywood patched in instead?
You're right to tell them to use a self-leveller where needed and then the luan or ply. Troweled on flooring adhesive sounds right too.
How do you plan on securing the luan/ply down to the old floor?
Cheers.
