this is odd…my BIL has an airstream 35′ drag-a-long. He just stooped in from OHIO where A.S. has a factory type joint..
anywho, he wants to mount a rail on thin paneling over a pocket door.
The factory “claimed” they use “special” precurved nails to mount things in these areas..hmmm.
There is a chairrail mounted, and I have not seen it yet ( sat am, I will) …they claim the nail is prebent to self clench, HUH?
who body heard of these?
I told him PL and a backer..but
HEY, WADDA I KNOW?

i've got a airstream and it wouldn't surprise me if they got some guy in back bending nails, but i'd sure like to meet the guy that hammers them in! he could help me frame and drive in all them nails i bend. anyway i think your on the right track with the pl. if you are on the outside wall you might be able to find one of the alumiun braces. good luck working a rv makes a engineer out of ya pretty quick. larry

I used to use clinch nails for leather work. They aren't actually bent, just shaped on one side. More of a single sided taper. You use an anvil under the work and as the nail is driven through the work against the anvil it bends back on itself. I was doing a kitchen for a customer last week. He asked me to look at a pocket door that would not move. He had used a 4d finish nail to tighten up a loose baseboard that was over the pocket. The nail protruded into the pocket and nailed the door. Wonder why the door was stuck.
Boats, RVs and the like go through a lot of vibration. A mechanical fastener that won't come loose is highly desired. Adhesive will certainly work but may not be the first choice in their manufacturing. Cost, using solvents in enclosed areas and the vibration issue are some of the reasons they may not use adhesives. Should work fine for you. It wouldn't surprise me if manufacturers had some special gun that is capable of inserting clinch type fasteners but I haven't actually seen one.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
I looked it this morning, I took out the door, and sure enough the chair rail is nailed with a hooked type of finish nail, it's curled back into the panel. Musta had a anvil behind when they made the wall.
He is gonna wedge a 2x4 in the pocket, scrape the finish from the masonite panel, glue up an oak 1x4 screw the sammich together until the PL is set up. Tehn remove the screws and 2x4, attach hat hooks in the screw holes made while clamping...hang his and wifes cowboy hat collection on the hooks, and hit the trail..pardner.
Wanna bet he'll be pullin in my driveway tomorrow and ask me to do it? LOL

He'll probably be hungry and thirsty too. You'd better go stock up on some 2x4's, PL and screws. He probably won't have any. PL holds quite well on finished stuff, I don't even bother to scuff small pieces anymore. They probably build a lot of assemblies on the bench in those shops and then install them in the shells. Have fun.

he won't be hungry, I checked out the fridge while i was there.
Man, these Airstreams are better than a LOT of houses I have seen. They really thunk out ALL the details.
