OK…….down to nuts and bolts.
We use the Grant track and trolly systems for all our pocket doors. Have for years and years. Great stuff. The complete unit systems that most home centers and lumber yards sell are junk and those that know that, know that, but that’s another story.
Here’s the question:
Where do you break the track?
I’ve seen some people cut it a few inches in from the closed side to make getting the door out easier if there is a problem after installation, and some cut it about an inch off finished jamb at the open side to remove the whole track to get the door out. One guy I know just cuts out the jamb at the trolly area to access the trollies. These cut outs are then covered by the door stop.
What do you do?

Helloooooooo.....
Sure is dark in here.

*Excuse my English if not perfect, here in Austria we are learned to if space allows to cut track at back of pocket for hardware extraction. Spacing of hanger pivot is inwardly adjusted so that trolley does not fall off track as it is by bumper stopped. Door is removed by taking door stop offen und loosing of hardware, hardware is removed by nagelstik. Grant is best hardware as it is Austrian made. If no space allows for this method we place track whole as we do not assume that our workmanship will become failed. Find reference to this in Grundwissen Des Zimmerers, Fachstoff Fur Zimmerleute. *Now there's a guy with confidence in his workmanship and the hometown product.Just put it in right and forget about it.I subscribe to that.
*Ed,Glad you brought this up. I've got some pocket doors to install, and would like to give the owners something better than what's commonly available. Where do I find Grant hardware?Gunter,Good post, thanks. What's a "nagelstick?"Dave
*Gunter,Understood. Thanks for the tip. Next time I have a question, please feel free to post in German. One of my top carpenters, Peter Krause, speaks German as his first language. I'm sure he would be glad to read it to me.Dave,We buy ours at the lumber yard here, but most good decorative hardware stores can order the parts for you. Grant may have a web site where you could order direct or find a dealer near you. Good luck.Ed.
*Hettich handles grant. You can order it here, but I could not find any product specs. But if you Register there is an option for them to send you a catalog.http://www2.hettichamerica.com/ha/dept.asp?dept%5Fid=300&main_dept=Grant+Door+Hardware&sub_dept=Grant&old_id=3
*Ed, I enjoy practice of pocket carpentry in Naples. Nagelstick fine product, but Naples zimmersczhlot does same thing and much economic. The number 2 works best for Grant installs. Juan Carlos Naples Italy
*Hey Ed: Glad to see you're still lurking about. Been away from the board for a while, and it seems some of the usual suspects have left. :-) Have a happy Thanksgiving. Catch up with you after the holidays.Mike
