Kraft backed insulation was installed in place of the specified 6 mil. poly V.B. in a house that’s under construction on the lake in Michigan. The contractor said that in this region he has had huge moisture and condensation problems with poly vapor barriers in the past and he thought it would be a mistake to install one. Since this goes against what I believe is right, I suspect the nightmares of the past this contractor alluded to was not a result of the vapor barrier itself, but of improper installation. However could I be missing something? Could there be something unique about this lakefront climate that would mean doing things a little bit differently? If not, what can be done now? I’m thinking of using a vapor barrier paint.
