I am having 5-inch red oak planks installed in my new house. I was interested in the possibility of using an oil finish, but everyone I talk to is recommending that I use an oil-based polyurethane. Since I am having approximately 1500 square feet of wood flooring installed, I like the idea that if I need to refinish a high-traffic area the oil finish would allow me to simply refinish a small area; where with the poly I would have the refinish the whole floor. The people I talk to say, “yeah, but the poly will last a lot longer than the oil, etc.” I’d appreciate any comments. Thanks.
