I bought a home in East Hampton, New York which has a 45,000 gal. 20’x40′ pool, and oil furnace. I want to swim in the cooler weather (May and Oct). Does gas or oil heater work faster or better? Which make heater is best? Is a 399K BTU gas heater ($2100 + $1500 tank burial) better than a Raypak 315K BTU ($3500) oil heater because it has more BTU? I won’t need to heat pool in summer.

Here's a site that may be of some assistance.

Hopefully, it will be a long, hot summer! Enjoy your new pool.

*Eh29: Those heaters will raise the pool temperature a little less than a degree F per hour. Most pool owners let a thermostst keep the pool at a constant temperature. If so, either heater is plenty to bring it to temperature (over 1-2 days each spring) and then keep it there (running a couple hours a day). If you only use it intermittently (e.g. on weekends) you'll save money by letting it drift down during non-use and turn the themrostat back on 10-15 hours before use. The lower average temperature will result in a lower average heat loss and fuel bills. The bigger difference between gas (natural gas or propane?) and oil will be fuel cost. Here in Kasilof, Alaska, natural gas (at $0.38/therm) is half the cost/BTU as fuel oil. Plus no oil tank, refilling, etc. It's a no-brainer up here that if you can get N.G., use it for everything you can. But check your prices locally. Note that for fuel oil, you'll be able to/have to buy in the summer, not the winter, so you'll get better prices than people buying in the height of the winter heating season. Happy swimming. -David
*I would go with oil, especially since you allready are using oil for your house heat. Remember, Long Island only has two thing cheaper than the rest of the world, .....COD oil and deli breakfasts. With a big enough tank you might make it thru the whole winter for you house too.
