greeting to all,
the tile around the walls of my pool have come loose in a couple areas. I drained the pool over the weedend and just finished popping off all the loose ones, some areas as large as 10 sq ft. They came off pretty cleanly so I can reuse most of them. My question is: do I need to scrape off all the old thinset before resetting the tile or can I just go over it with new stuff. And if I need to scrape it off, what’s the best tool. I’m afraid my large chipping hammer may do to much gouging.
thanks in advance

Maybe I'll be back to find out.besides, My job tomorrow is to start prep on those antique Tunisian tiles so I should take some photos of cleaning them up on the backs. I set up the tools etc down there today to get ready.

will you be soaking them in straight white vineagar???Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming<!----><!----><!---->
WOW!!! What a Ride!Forget the primal scream, just ROAR!!!
not need for these.
They were antique and had been set in lime/sand mortar and grout, so it's mostly a matter of running it past a wire cup brush on the grinder/polisher. Probably not helpful to this OP. His portland thinset will be tighter bond. vinegar or other acid might help him

Picturing a hard vitreous tileher, I would use a hard putty knife or old chisle at low angle.
Sometimes a grinder wheel to etch.
If it comes off too hard it is OK to just leave it on, but that will give you a high set by time you add another bunch of thinset to it.

Empty pools in S. California become floating bathtubs with a good rain or ground water levels. Cereally, they will pop out of the ground from the water force.
When they replaced bad tiles in my pool, they punched a hole in the bottom that they repaired just before replastering.
