Porch flooring: Should you use a floor nailer for 1X4 T&G yellow pine and fir porch flooring? Faced nailed also? Whaqt is the longest lasting and most durable finish? I would like suggestions for an alternate material such as oni, brazilian redwood?, composites. I’ve painted the yellow pine and fir – both labor intensive and not very enduring. Thanks from Kansas City.

I can advise you on the worst choice; pressure treated (southern yellow pine??) 1x4 TG. It cupped, split and moved so much through the seasons that it actually ripped the deck framing apart!

Kim, if prep'd and installed properly, fir flooring will last many years with attention to upkeep. The flooring should be painted/sealed on all sides, edges and fresh cuts. It should be installed running away from and pitched from the house so the t&g's don't grab the water as it runs off the porch. Have several successful and long lasting installs in the weather of Ohio. Admittedly, the old growth fir installed many years ago seems to last longer than what is available today. Best of luck on whatever you choose.
