Could anyone advise re: the best wood for a historically correct tongue and groove covered porch. Some have said treated yellow pine, others recommend Brazilian Walnut and still others have suggested a VG fir. Which will require least maintenance and is most cost efficient?

It could depend on where you're located. (regarding the historical aspect ie regional)
White pine would be the norm out here with cedar a distant second. Now the reverse would be true.
Pressure treated spruce will last but I'm not a fan of the toxins used in some.

*Katie, Many porches used a 4" t & g vertical grain fir for decking. It is still available, and runs about $4/ft.walk gooddavid
*"Historically correct"......treated yellow pine? I don't think so! A David T. pointed out; 4 inch T & G fir, and/or 4 inch T & G (untreated) yellow pine was/is very common in my region.Davo
