Portable air gun CO2 cylinders

user-128445 | Posted in Tools for Home Building on April 19, 2007 01:50am

Has anyone heard of the Jac Pac (http://www.supplierpipeline.com/jacpac_mm.asp?products=y&workshop=y&jacmorr=y&jacpac=y)? It’s a portable compressed CO2 cartridge that straps to your belt. You can hook your airgun to it and shoot away. I get a lot of little jobs where I only need to shoot a couple nails, and lugging a “portable” compressor to the job is a pain.

I’m thinking about making a purchase, and was wondering if anyone has used them? I see Lowe’s carries a version made by Kobalt (http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=166441-61735-J-6901-100&detail=cr&lpage=none).

Also, any warnings as to hooking up nailers to compressed CO2?

Thanks.

I saw these at Lowes the other day and was curious, after having seen some posts here a few weeks ago about them. I asked the clerk how much it costs to refill 'em. Sez she "We don't refill -- you just swap them for a full one, like propane." "OK", sez I -- "Then how much to swap?" "Dunno", sez she. "Never had one come in."

    You'd think . . . .

IIRC refills can be done whee paint ball guns are refilled, cost around $5

The return rates at Lowe's are not worth it. Go to a paintball supplier. Can get my 20oz bottles filled for $4 a piece.Greg

The small bottles that comes with it can be refilled for $2.49 at Dick's Sporting Goods.I have the Kobalt version - only played with it a bit as of yet. Paid $85 for it and that came with (2) 9oz tanks - 1 filled, 1 empty.Considering the tanks cost $25 apeice - that makes the regulator kit about $35.Plus, it came with a kickbutt 10' coiled hose which is real nice and also with a bonus airgun kit - which adds another $5-8 of value to the package. At Lowes, the Kobalt version has a 3 year warranty - what kind of warranty does the Jacpac version have? The rubber ring around the pressure guage has come of of mine - just a glue thing really.makes all of your nailers cordless though...JT

        "Go to a paintball supplier."

Great idea -- except I'd likely end up with orange splashes all over my trim 'cause I mixed up the paint gun with the nail gun. ;-)

I've been using the one from Lowe's for a couple of weeks now. It works well for small pick up work. Haven't used it for anything other than brad and finish nailers. I will say I had to return the 1st one I got the day I got it. Regulater was stuck wide open and blew the hose completely off of it. 2nd one works well.

From what I've seen( my friend has the Jac-pac) The two units are identical besides color.

I wonder what this means, a couple nails?  Not being sarcastic or at all critical but, at what point do you leave the nail guns at home and just take a hammer and some nails?

I fully appreciate how helpful it is to have a trim gun and a brad nailer but don't you guys ever go in "unarmed"?

I actually did that on a small job today. Sure, hammer and nails work fine -- and I even managed to do it without breaking anything -- but I think a nail gun ends up with a much neater job.
